The best free A/B testing tool for most small websites in 2026 is freeabtest.com: a free-forever plan with 10,000 tested visitors a month, then Starter at $10 and Growth at $50. The well-known alternatives (VWO, Convert, Optimizely, Crazy Egg, AB Tasty, Kameleoon and Unbounce) either charge from about $99 to $495 a month for published plans, or ask you to request a quote.
We make freeabtest.com, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to make the comparison useful even if you never sign up with us, and we say where other tools do things we don't. This article compares freeabtest.com with platforms that cost more, or that are a weaker fit for developers and small teams who want plain A/B tests.
What "free" means here
A tool counts as free on this list only if its own pricing page offers a plan that costs $0 with no end date. A free trial is not a free plan. Several vendors below sell a trial and then a paid subscription only.
Three numbers decide whether a free or cheap plan is useful:
- Tested traffic. How many visitors a month can be put into experiments. Most vendors call these monthly tested users (MTU): unique visitors included in at least one running test.
- Concurrent tests. How many experiments can run at once.
- Variations. How many versions you can compare in one test. Two (control plus one challenger) is enough for most small sites, because every extra variation needs more traffic.
The plans compared
Prices are what each vendor published on 15 October 2026. Where a page only offers a demo or a sales conversation, we write "quote only".
| Tool | Free or trial | Published paid entry (A/B) | Main catch | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| freeabtest.com | Free forever: 10,000 tested visitors a month (300 a day), 1 running test, 10 tests lifetime, control plus 1 variation | Starter $10/month (250,000 visitors, 20 experiments); Growth $50/month (1,000,000, unlimited experiments) | No visual editor yet. Free plan is one test at a time | Developers who want code-first testing and plain statistics |
| Convert Experiences | 15-day free trial, no card | Growth $399/month monthly or $299/month billed annually for 100,000 MTU | Starts near $300 a month even on annual billing | Teams that want a visual editor and published prices |
| Crazy Egg | 30-day free trial | Plus $99/month billed annually (A/B starts here; 150,000 tracked pageviews) | Starter at $29 has no A/B. All plans billed annually | Marketers who want heatmaps and recordings with A/B |
| Kameleoon (PBX Starter) | 30-day free trial, up to 3 experiments, no card | From $495/month for up to 10 experiments and 50,000 tested visitors | Entry paid plan is nearly 50× freeabtest Starter | Teams buying prompt-based experimentation |
| Unbounce | 14-day free trial, no card | Experiment $149/month (A/B on landing pages; up to 30,000 visitors) | A/B is for Unbounce-hosted landing pages, not your whole site. Build at $99 has no A/B | Landing-page marketers |
| VWO | No free plan listed | Quote only (Growth, Pro, Enterprise; demo request) | No public price | Teams that need a full experimentation suite and a sales process |
| Optimizely | No free plan listed | Quote only (custom packaging) | No public price | Large enterprises |
| AB Tasty | No self-serve free plan | Quote only (custom proposal by traffic and modules) | No public price; access is through their commercial team | Mid-market and enterprise CRO programs |
Yearly billing on freeabtest.com gets 2 months free (Starter $100/year, Growth $500/year). None of the quote-only vendors published a self-serve price we could check.
freeabtest.com: free forever, then $10 or $50
This is our product, so here is what it does today and what it doesn't. Facts below match our pricing page on 15 October 2026.
What works now:
- A/B tests and split URL tests, set up with a JavaScript snippet of about 14 KB gzipped (install guides for Google Tag Manager and WordPress are in the docs)
- Sticky assignment: each visitor ID is hashed with the experiment ID, so the same visitor always sees the same variant
- Page visit, click (by CSS selector), form submit and custom event goals, plus conversions you send from your own code
- Targeting by device, UTM, referrer and new or returning visitors
- Sample ratio mismatch alerts, safe edits to running tests, and shareable results links
- Results with conversion rate, lift, a Wilson 95% interval for each variation, and a two-proportion z-test of each variation against the control. Significance is only tested once every variant has at least 100 visitors
- Live stats while a test runs
- Separate dev, staging and production environments, an audit log, and a REST API
- Free plan: 10,000 tested visitors a month and 300 a day, 1 running test at a time, 10 tests in total, 1 project, 1 team seat, and a control plus 1 variation
- Paid plans: up to 50 variations. Starter is $10 a month for 250,000 tested visitors, 20 active experiments, 3 projects and 5 seats. Growth is $50 a month for 1,000,000 visitors, unlimited active experiments, 10 projects and 15 seats. Enterprise is custom
- Over the limit: new visitors see the control and are not counted. We never upgrade you or bill you automatically
What is not built yet (and we are clear about it):
- No visual editor. Today you build variations as pages or in code. A visual editor is planned for Phase 4 on Growth and Enterprise only
- Heatmaps (Phase 3) and session recordings (Phase 4) are planned for paid plans only
- Funnels and auto-shift traffic to the winner (Phase 4)
- A WordPress plugin (Phase 5). Today WordPress sites install the snippet from the docs guide
- Revenue goals are not available today. To measure a paid conversion, track the purchase as a custom event
Choose freeabtest.com if you can paste a script tag, you want results you can explain, and you do not want to start at $99 to $495 a month. If you need a point-and-click visual editor today, Convert, Crazy Egg or Unbounce (for landing pages) will fit better, at a higher price.
Convert Experiences: published prices, from $299 a month
Convert is unusual among the larger tools: it publishes prices. Growth is $399 a month on monthly billing, or $299 a month billed annually, for 100,000 monthly tested users. Pro is $599 monthly or $420 billed annually. Enterprise is quote only and annual only. The trial lasts 15 days and does not need a card. Convert's own FAQ says the product may not be worth it for low-traffic sites yet, which is an honest answer we agree with.
Convert includes a visual editor, split URL tests, heatmaps and SRM checks on Growth. That is more surface area than freeabtest.com has today. The tradeoff is price: Convert's cheapest annual plan is about 30× freeabtest Starter, and about 6× freeabtest Growth, before you go past 100,000 MTU.
Crazy Egg: A/B starts at $99 a month, billed yearly
Crazy Egg's pricing page lists Starter at $29, Plus at $99, Pro at $249 and Enterprise at $599, all per month and billed annually, with a 30-day free trial. A/B testing, CTAs and error tracking start on Plus, not on Starter. Plus includes 150,000 tracked pageviews a month and unlimited A/B tests. Pro adds targeting by country, UTMs and conversions.
Crazy Egg is strongest if you want heatmaps and session recordings in the same product as A/B tests. freeabtest.com does not ship heatmaps or recordings yet. If all you need is a clean A/B split and statistics, you are paying for a larger analytics suite.
Kameleoon: from $495 a month on PBX Starter
Kameleoon's plans page lists a 30-day PBX Starter free trial (up to 3 experiments, no card) and PBX Starter from $495 a month for up to 10 experiments and 50,000 tested visitors. Enterprise is custom, with unlimited experiments and traffic. PBX is prompt-based experimentation: you describe changes in natural language rather than using a classic visual editor only.
At $495 a month for 50,000 tested visitors, Kameleoon Starter costs more per month than freeabtest Growth while covering half the tested-visitor allowance of freeabtest Starter. That can be fair if you want their prompt workflow, sequential testing and enterprise modules. It is a weak fit if your budget is under $100 a month.
Unbounce: A/B on landing pages from $149 a month
Unbounce is a landing page builder first. A/B testing appears on the Experiment plan at $149 a month (or $112 a month billed annually), with unlimited A/B testing, up to 30,000 visitors, confidence intervals and manual traffic allocation. The Build plan at $99 a month does not include A/B. There is a 14-day free trial with no card.
Use Unbounce when the pages you test live inside Unbounce. It is not a general site-wide A/B tool for an existing SaaS app or marketing site you already host elsewhere. freeabtest.com runs on any site where you can paste a snippet.
VWO, Optimizely and AB Tasty: quote only
VWO lists Growth, Pro and Enterprise for web experimentation, each with a "Schedule a Demo" button and no public price. Growth includes a visual editor, unlimited experiments and variations, and multi-arm bandits. The pricing page does not list a free plan.
Optimizely states that every plan is individually packaged and asks you to describe your needs so they can create a plan. No self-serve price appears on the pricing page.
AB Tasty states that pricing is custom, based on traffic volume, domains, modules and implementation scope, with no fixed plans on the pricing page. Their documentation also says platform access is created by their commercial team, not through a public signup.
These three are built for teams that already have a CRO budget and a procurement process. They are usually stronger on visual editing, personalization, governance and support SLAs. They are a poor match if you want to start a first test this afternoon without a sales call.
How do I pick an affordable A/B testing tool?
Answer three questions in order.
1. Do you need a visual editor today? If yes, look at Convert, Crazy Egg or Unbounce (landing pages), and budget from about $99 to $399 a month. If a developer will build variations, freeabtest.com works today without that editor.
2. Can you start without a sales call? freeabtest.com, Convert, Crazy Egg, Kameleoon (PBX trial) and Unbounce publish a path you can start yourself. VWO, Optimizely and AB Tasty are quote only.
3. How much traffic do you actually have? This matters more than any plan limit. Here is how many visitors per variant a test needs at a 3% baseline conversion rate, 95% confidence and 80% power (calculated with the standard two-proportion formula):
| Lift you want to detect (relative) | Visitors per variant | Total for an A/B test |
|---|---|---|
| 10% (3.0% to 3.3%) | 53,211 | 106,422 |
| 20% (3.0% to 3.6%) | 13,914 | 27,828 |
| 30% (3.0% to 3.9%) | 6,455 | 12,910 |
| 50% (3.0% to 4.5%) | 2,518 | 5,036 |
If you get 10,000 visitors a week to the page you want to test, you can detect a 20% lift in about 3 weeks, but a 10% lift would take most of a year. No free plan fixes that. Paying Convert $299 a month does not shrink the sample size; it only buys you a different editor and feature set.
What to check before you pay
- What counts as a tested user. Most tools count a visitor once a month no matter how many tests they enter. Check, because some count per test or use pageviews (Crazy Egg) instead of tested users.
- What happens at the limit. freeabtest.com stops counting new visitors and shows the control. Convert lets you buy extra MTU packs. Crazy Egg pauses heatmaps and A/B collection until the next month. Know the behavior before a traffic spike.
- Trial vs free forever. A 14 or 30 day trial ends. A free-forever plan does not. If you are still learning sample size math, a trial clock works against you.
- Annual lock-in. Crazy Egg's published plans are billed annually. Convert and Unbounce discount annual billing but still offer monthly. freeabtest.com offers both.
- Statistics you can explain. If a tool says "95% chance to win", find out what that means. You will have to defend the result to someone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free A/B testing tool in 2026?
For developers and small teams who can paste a script tag, freeabtest.com is the strongest free option we checked among tools that otherwise charge hundreds a month. It has a free-forever plan, then Starter at $10 and Growth at $50. VWO, Optimizely and AB Tasty do not publish a permanent free plan.
Does VWO have a free plan?
VWO's pricing page, checked on 15 October 2026, lists Growth, Pro and Enterprise with a demo request and no published price. It does not list a free plan.
How much does Convert Experiences cost?
Growth starts at $399 per month billed monthly, or $299 per month billed annually, for 100,000 monthly tested users. Pro starts at $599 monthly or $420 billed annually. Enterprise is quote only. There is a 15-day free trial with no card.
Is Crazy Egg free for A/B testing?
No. Starter at $29 a month billed annually does not include A/B testing. Plans with A/B start at Plus, $99 a month billed annually. There is a 30-day free trial.
What does freeabtest.com include for free?
10,000 tested visitors a month (up to 300 a day), 1 running test, 10 tests lifetime, 1 project, control plus 1 variation, page/click/form/custom goals, targeting, SRM alerts and Wilson intervals. There is no visual editor yet. Details are on our pricing page.
What is a monthly tested user?
A unique visitor ID assigned to at least one running experiment in a calendar month. Pages without a running test do not count. One visitor in three tests usually counts once.
If your next step is a single landing page or homepage test and you can ship a variation in HTML or a second URL, start on the free plan, run one experiment properly, and upgrade only when the 10,000 visitor cap or the one-test limit gets in the way. Paying for a visual editor and a large enterprise suite is the right move later, not before you have finished a first honest test.
